Such a good day like this

The title of this song is (좋은 날 )"Good Day" featured in IU's third mini album Real released on December 9, 2010 by LOEN Entertainment more. "Good Day" is composed by Lee Min-Soo and written by lyricist Kim Ee-Na. This song also comes with an Instrumental version in the said album. IU made her official comeback with this album on KBS's Music Bank on December 10, 2010 in which several weeks later in the same show happened what I quote as "Good Day's Most Memorable Performance" out of those countless "Good Day" live performances of IU and it is not because of a fancy stage or gimmicks but something that will touch your heart.

As an International-based fan, you can probably conclude that I listen to this song just because I like IU (well yeah) or maybe because of the catchy melody that it had (of course). Also, in the back of your mind you are also asking why listen to something you cannot understand (which is true). But then again most of the people around the world have listened to song(s) in which they have little understanding or have no understanding at all. Pretty much a good music is good music and that you want to listen to it (Yeah!). With the technology we have today, we can upgrade our way of listening to foreign music by understanding its lyrics through translation and subtitles, by hard working netizens, to your native tongue or most commonly in English Subtitles. Now, I will try, with the best of my abilities, to interpret and get the feeling of IU's "Good Day" song. The lyrics of Romantasized and English Subtitle is available above and feel free to make your own interpretation and review.

Let me start on the composition of "Good Day" by Lee Min-Soo, a composer that is familiar working with the talented IU. He is the composer of IU's hit duet song "Nagging", a song for the show "We Got Married", featuring 2AM's Seulong (gonna review that as well). For the intro of the song it features a piano piece that will make you feel as if you are waking up and getting ready for your day (シ). It is then accompanied by some type of a wind instrument (trumpet?) that will make you think that you are getting a Royal greeting by a Royal Family. Pretty much it is welcoming us into, as what the title of the song is implying, a Good Day. Through out the song you will hear the constant drum beat along with the Piano, Trumpets, with some participation of an Electric Guitar and other instruments that I am not able to recognize (how I wish to learn to play a musical instrument). I like what they did in some parts where IU sings one line and four different instruments (not simultaneously) is played in the same notes. Now let us go to  the lyrical content and IU's vocals.

IU really did "Good Day" justice when she deliver the famous "3 high pitch" in the line "I'm in my dream!".  It showcased her vocal abilities and it also reminded me of a childhood game that we play in birthday parties back in the Philippines, where you say "Happy Birthday" and try to hold out the "day......" part until you run out of breath and whoever has the longest time wins a prize (experienced in doing this back then, I might have hit the "3 high pitch" ^_^ ). IU's voice is really just too refreshing especially when she sing "Oppa~ga", and I am like "OMGasdfghjkl". And she is just tooooo adorable. ♥ As for the song's lyrical content we first go to a statement from LOEN Entertainment in which they explain as quoted,

"The lyrics of the song portray a girl who is in love yet too shy to confess her feelings, expressing the sweetness and uneasiness of a girl's first crush in a pure yet honest manner."

It did portray like that. LOEN Entertainment also added,

"No doubt IU's mind-blowing vocals and her timid yet cute performance will make the hearts of all male fans race for her."

That statement LOEN, I second the motion. It made me .....Gasm....., Eargasm that is (keep it white and keep it PG13).

As what LOEN Entertainment said, if you read/sing the English translation of the song, it really did depicted what LOEN explained. But let me just go back and dig in to the lyrics and interpret it as I see/feel/hear/smell?/taste?, in other words, how I perceive it. I will  go through per stanza or what they call bars in rapping (Yo! Yo!)

First stanza of "Good Day" depicts the "Planning" stage of IU's confession to her "first crush" (Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!). While IU is reenacting and analyzing her confession to her first crush, she is having this feeling, the feeling that you know this is the day to do it as the things in her surrounding is on full support of her action (this reminds me of that EPIC Fan ♥). As this feeling is pushing her to go for it, will she actually gonna do it ? OMGasdfghjkl....cliffhangers!!! Ok, let me just relax and read the second stanza.

Second stanza (woohoo!) , Chorus,
depicts the "This is it, no turning back" stage of IU's confession to her crush (Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!! Is it really happening?). As she is on her way to confess her feelings, she goes on talking to herself, like having the Angel and Devil "advisers" in both sides of her shoulder whispering battle strategy, while crush is in front of her. She is in that million dollar question (Jai-ho!), the hardest questions in her young life, which is, "Eotteokhae?". I know we have gone through with this dilemma in some point so we feel for IU~ssi. It does not matter if you are a linguistic professor, a public speaker, or a simple loudmouth, you will also have a hard time saying, "Naneunyo, Oppaga, Joheungeol", in front of the person you like. That is right saying it as how IU sings it (learn Korean first buddy). Now the questions of life is also hitting me, "did she do it?". OMGasdfghjkl......This cliffhangers.....Gotta.....read.....Spoilers!!..Alright too much Korean Drama fanatics expressions. Keep Calm and read.

Third stanza, did you do it IU? (don't do it IU Devil) The way IU is singing, it looks like she is still having that shoulder meeting with the Angel & Devil. That is alright IU~ssi, one step at a time. Just so you know IU, whatever clothes you are wearing, whatever your hairstyle is, in front of this Oppa (me), Oppa will not be able to pretend not to see you because, "I'm in my dream!!!", oh wait too early for that. To the fourth.

Fourth stanza, Chorus, going back to the "This is it, no turning back" stage (the irony). Think before you act, is a great saying. Just take your time IU~ssi. So will IU still plead the Fifth? (uh-huh, you know what I'm saying? *Timothy Dela Ghetto face expression*).

Fifth stanza, still pleading the Fifth? Do not be intimidated IU, you can do it. (rieoldaebak aiyu)

Sixth stanza, Chorus. Alright IU, "Patience is a Virtue"

Seventh stanza, Aigoo! hana, dul....Alright this is your time IU! "I'm in my dream!!!!!~!!!!!~!!!!!"  Way to go IU! Attention First crush, "it's too beautiful, beautiful day, make it a Good Day, just don't make me cry in such a Good Day like this." OMGasdfghjkl....what happen next?...Need...Next...Stanza!! Awwwww...it's the end.

Kim Ee-Na noona must have been working a double job as a scripwriter as the lyrics is like a summary that can be presented in a movie or drama production company. It is like presenting a character in a teenage-themed story played by IU. It can also be for those noona's still stuck in there teen crush habits even though they passed the stage (in terms of age) . Alright I think I'm getting off topic a little, but the lyrical content reminds me of a Thai movie that involves the shyness of a girl to tell her feelings to her first crush titled "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". Going through the contents of the lyrics (thank you translators) there must be a memorable line/part for me, and of course there is. I will call this "Epic Lines".

What is "Epic Lines"? Epic lines are line/part of a song that you remember while your trying to share a song you heard with others, but your mind is drawing blank so then you are trying to describe it by singing/dictating a line of that song (alright sometimes a person even forget the lyrics so they will try humming the song). These lines also can be used/already used/frequently used in Facebook status update, a tweet in Twitter, or creatively done in Tumblr (etc...). It is also lines that is meaningful to a person, may it be due to its similarities to their experiences or getting caught up to the expression of feeling the song is trying to express. Having explained what "Epic Lines" is, let us go to my "Epic Line" in "Good Day".

Epic Line:
"naneunyo...oppaga...joheungol...eotteokhae"

I picked this because it can be easily remembered and also the way it is placed in the song. It is in the last part of the chorus and we all know the chorus is easily remembered also it is situated in the last line (memory 101, last part is the most remembered based on my memory capabilities). As for the lines delivery (word play), meaning & significance (something touching/nostalgic/etc.), there is not much in it, but as an Oppa there is alot (LOL). Translated in English it says "As for me, Oppa I like you, what to do?", with this quote coming out of IU's beautiful voice and with hopes that Oppa refers to is me, I would instantly log in to my Facebook and update my status, open my Twitter and tweet this exact words, and create a post on Tumblr (oh wait I have a mediocre skills when it comes to putting creative works using computer editing), well I will express to the world this dreamy line. ( ^_^ ).

With a hit single there must be a visual presentation to accommodate the sense of sight. Into the moving visual story that is called Music Videos aka MV's.

Before I start my review on "Good Day" music video, let us go to a statement again by LOEN Entertainment (LOEN likes to explain things). LOEN Entertainment states as quoted,

"In the music video of "Good Day", IU acts out the young girl, honestly depicting the excitement of a crush. The music video contains dramatic structures with lively touches, gaining attention as Chung Jae-Hyung makes his appearance as a music fairy who encourages IU."

Well once again LOEN explained everything but I will once again dig into the music video and interpret it as I see/feel/hear/smell?/taste?, in other words, how I perceive it. I will go through the music video using 3 criteria, the presentation (setting, backgrounds, visuals, cutting, editing, etc...), the symbolism (some Da Vince Code-esque artistic representation and its connection to the actual lyrics), the dance (as what mostly hit KPop songs have in their repertoire). You might say that you have seen this criteria used before in reviewing a music video, well you are right, I got this idea from Eat Your Kimchi's (check them out) YouTube duo Simon and Martina. But I will do it through my own style and I will always give the credits to Simon and Martina for introducing this criteria. I will also add the cameo, as there are some "notable" guest in the music video. Here is the "Good Day" (좋은 날 ) Music Video.

(Do not kill me LOEN)

Is it 1930's? 1940's? 1950's? 1960's? Well I do not which decade, but the setting of the "Good Day" music video is from one of those decades I mentioned (somehow, well I am a 90's kid, born in the late 80's), in short, its a retro setting. Having a setting of the past will feel nostalgic for the viewers who lived in that particular era and also let the post-era born viewers have a feel living during that time. For me, they made the background, props, and clothes exactly like there is a retro feel in it but with a few question marks in my head like "Roof-ception?".

The background used limited colors and use mostly a shade of gray and shade of brown colors to show its simplicity and to have that sense of vintage look, Aside from those shades, the color red, orange, light blue, and green is also used to compliment the limited colors together.

As for the props, the use of a Gumball machine (retro right there, Pawn Stars), toy soldiers made of wood, 3-wheeled bike with a carriage-looking seat at the back, bike with basket in front (well they do still use it today but there are only few, BMX is the way to go or should I say go XBox, PS3, iPad2), telephone booth (iPhone, wut?), antenna TV (Smart TV, wut?), candy store (well general store) with candies in the jars, gray postcards, brick-based houses, old school street lamps, newspaper (oh wait that still exist), Tide bleach powder, sweaters the cast wear, the dresses, the grey jumpsuits, and IU's wardrobe, the red I-dunno-watchamacallit- shirt with long plaid-with-beige-and-diminishing-shade-of-green skirt, in the beginning and the red pseudo-collared sweater attached (?) on a light brown skirt, with the depends-on-the-hour-of-the-day-changing-color-from-orange-to-purple leggings on IU's dance number in a "Roof?".

What is this "Roof?" I am mentioning about? Well that is the part that is slightly I am confused with in this video. If you look at the dance number of the MV you can tell that IU and the crew is dancing in the street in front of a house. Now when the camera angle is on the top of the IU dance crew you will notice that there is something more at the bottom of that street (Sewers? Hell? -not for IU-, dunno). Then again when you look at the suppose house closely, it actually resemble more of a chimney and take note it has a red door (well IU I guess you are making Santa Clause's job a bit easier there). Also that lone window that looks like a window for the attic. Now we therefore conclude that they are not on the street but on the roof instead and that means they are on a roof with a roof in the background?, "Roof-ception?". But wait, I have overlooked one thing, the bridge, where IU made that Titanic pose while singing "I'm in my dream". What is that lone bridge doing in that roof and why is it connected to a suppose other roof (welcome house burglars also Batman and Spiderman is thankful for this architectural design). I am not bashing in any form the way the MV directors and producers represent this, but I have no clue what it meant but just to name it as either a "Roof-ception?" or a "Roof-street?".

The symbolism (Marshmellow) in this MV is in the retro setting itself. We (younger generation like myself) are all aware (maybe from our parents, stories, and other encounters about the history of previous generations) that people in the past is known for its conservatism in terms on love (well people might disagree on this, but yeah). As what I have written before, the lyrical content of the song is the shyness of a girl to confess her feelings to the guy she likes, which showed the conservative nature of a person being pure and honest. Also, the parrot in the beginning represents the inner feelings of IU, where the bird said, "I like you, Oppa" (instant translate, no Google needed, wut!?). As what LOEN said in a statement, Chung Jae-Hyung is a music fairy of encouragement, which also represents IU's confused inner feelings and motivation/courage. Speaking of Mr. Chung Jae-Hyung let us go to the cameo in the MV.

The cameo's for this MV are Mr. Chung Jae-Hyung, the Parrot, and Dancer hyung. Yes I know you guys also noticed that this Dancer hyung is prominent in this MV (lucky guy). Chung Jae-Hyung~ssi is a Korean pop singer-songwriter,pianist and a film music composer more. He is one of the funniest guest in Running Man and also one of the weakest ( ✌ Jae-Hyung~ssi). The Parrot, I do not know the name of the parrot so he will be named the Parrot more. Dancer hyung, I also do not know his name (sorry hyung), but this guy is really noticeable in the MV (no wiki). He dance with a passion, with those dedicated dance moves, dancer hyung, really danced as if he is IU's partner (you lose crush in the store). Not to count out the other dancers, which also danced gracefully. I did not include the actor that portray IU's crush (not that I'm jelly or anything, maybe), because first I do not know his name (sorry hyung, also no wiki) and dancer hyung really outshone him (IMO only, don't bash me) in the MV. Mentioning Dancer hyung, you can tell there is a dance, and yes there is (one of the ingredients of Kpop magic).

The "Good Day" dance is one of all the dances in IU's MV's I wanted to learn (Dancer hyung teach me). It is comprised of simple steps involving the hands, the feet, the hips, and the face (expressions). The dance also requires a partner to perform which really connects to the lyrics. There is this dance where IU guided her partner (dancer hyung) in lifting his chin up, which is a line in the chorus. Also, when IU fist bump her chest while moving left and right, shows how she felt in the line "Why you're like this to me, whatever it is you're saying".  My most notable dance step is the one where she is depicting embarrassment by covering her mouth and wiggling her legs as if she is nervous while moving left and right as if trying to get out of the situation (to get a clear picture of what I am trying to say go to 4:22 of the video). But my Epic Dancestep is the "Oppa~ga.....Eotteokhae?" at 3:45 and 3:52 (yeah I know it is not even a dance step but it is too OMGasdfghjkl cute, just melted).

(Note: There is a Japanese version of this song with a Japanese version of the music video. I could do a review in the songs Japanes version but the content will probably be the same. As for the music video, I cannot get a hold of the full-version of the MV to watch, so I am not able to do any.)

Being it had been a year and a half since this song is released so we can assume that there are live performances of "Good Day" by IU. Well there is (duh?). This is the compilation of IU's "Good Day" performances I gathered up from those amazing uploaders (well some that I have viewed and some that was not yet targeted by MBC, SBS, KBS, & LOEN Entertainment). Enjoy the performances.

IU's "Good Day" Live Performances

As I have mentioned above that IU had one of the "Good Day" performance which I called "Good Day's Most Memorable Performance" featuring the EPIC Fan. Here is the video:

This particular performance was on January 7, 2011 on the show "Music Bank". As you have watched at the start of this video, when IU started to sing "Good Day", you will noticeably hear a scream coming out of the audience which you can tell is only coming from 1 person. What that person is screaming is the Fanchant part in the song as what I showed you in the lyrics above (the red and blue part). That lone person delivered those part and cheer on IU as she starts. I am not sure if it is a static of some sort, but I can really hear that same fan constantly doing the Fanchant part of the song until the end. At the end of the show, IU's "Good Day" won first place and this is her Thank You message:

There is not an English Subtitle here, but from the variety show Strong Heart, IU said that she first give thanks that lone fan that cheered her on and from then on she said she will try to be number 1 to the fans. This is why I called that lone fan as the most EPIC Fan.

Well that is all folks, my review on IU's (좋은 날 )"Good Day"
